Spot Tone is made by Cary Norton LLC, a company registered in Alabama, USA. Contact: support@spottoneapp.com
The use of the Spot Tone application, including beta and pre-release versions, and the online services that support it: license activation, the free trial, update and model downloads, crash reports, and the optional contribution of corrections.
Spot Tone is sold in two forms.
Indie is a one-time purchase covering two of your own Macs. A Mac is activated, and can be deactivated to move the license to another of your Macs. It carries every update inside the major version you bought, the detector included, with nothing recurring.
Lab is a per-seat subscription, one seat per Mac, and the lab chooses which Macs hold the seats. If a Lab subscription ends, a Mac that held a seat keeps working with the hand tools, as Indie; the lab-only features stop.
Once a Mac is activated, what you bought is yours on that Mac. It works offline indefinitely and its exports are never watermarked, even if our server is unreachable, and even if a Lab subscription later ends—a Mac that held a Lab seat keeps working as Indie. The app checks in from time to time (about weekly for Indie, daily for Lab) to count seats and to learn about a license we have had to withdraw.
You may not resell, rent or sublicense the software, reverse engineer it, or bypass or tamper with its license checks.
A free trial runs for 14 days and everything works cleanly during it. The trial is granted once per computer; we may end a trial in case of abuse.
Spot Tone never takes your work away. Without a license, and after a trial ends, every tool still works and every export still leaves the app—but plain exports carry a watermark and a size cap. Returning a file to Photoshop or Lightroom, and Overwrite Mode, are blocked rather than watermarked, so a marked image is never written into your catalog or over your original.
Beta versions may contain errors, may change without notice, may lose features, and may stop working. Keep backups of your scans and your work. Features shown in a beta may change or disappear in the final release. The free beta runs through 2026-12-31.
Your photographs, scans and projects are yours. Spot Tone processes them on your computer. We never receive your images, except the frames you deliberately contribute (section 8).
Contributing corrections is off until you turn it on. When it is on, the app sends crops of frames you have corrected, together with their filenames, so the detector can learn from them. Sending one is not a promise that we will use it: contributions are reviewed, and we reject or discard any we do not want, so most of what arrives never trains anything. By contributing you confirm that you own or have the rights to those images and that they are lawful; we may refuse, remove or report content, and may suspend access.
Activating a license or a trial sends your license or trial request, a one-way hash of the computer's hardware identifier, and the computer's name. Buying a license means we hold the email address you bought with. The app also sends a one-time install record and, when it crashes, a crash report; both are described in the Privacy Notice, which says exactly what each one contains, how long it is kept, and how to have it deleted.
We may update the software, its detector models and the online services it uses. Some updates may be required to keep using online features such as activation. We do not guarantee that the online services are available without interruption.
If we stop developing or operating Spot Tone, we will give 90 days' notice and publish a final build that needs no server, so that one-time licenses keep working. Subscriptions are refunded pro rata for the period past the date.
Paddle is the merchant of record for purchases. They run checkout, collect and remit tax, issue invoices, and process refunds and chargebacks under their own terms. A refunded license stops working.
To the extent permitted by law, Spot Tone is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. If you are a consumer, your statutory rights are not affected by these terms.
To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential damages, loss of data, loss of images, or loss of profit arising from the use of, or inability to use, the software. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
We may suspend or terminate a license or trial obtained fraudulently or used in breach of these terms. You may stop using the software at any time; deactivating a computer frees its seat.
We may update these terms. You will be asked to accept the new version the next time the app starts. If you do not accept, you cannot continue using the software.
